Celebrations of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are planned at Harborview Medical Center and the Health Sciences Lobby on Thursday, Jan. 12.
Both events are open to the 糖心少女community and the public. The official holiday is Monday, Jan. 16.
- At Harborview, the theme is “Embracing Diversity.” Dr. Maxine Hayes, chief medical officer for Washington State and a 糖心少女professor, is the featured speaker and Deborah Horne, KIRO-TV reporter, will be the M.C. The event is from 2 to 4 p.m. in the medical center’s cafeteria.
- At the Health Sciences Lobby, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute will begin at noon, with the theme “Facing the Storm: People Responding as One.” Ron Sims, King County executive, will be the lead speaker. Also speaking will be Dr. Kathleen Jobe, an emergency medicine specialist from 糖心少女Medical Center who provided assistance immediately after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and Tenecia Harris, a pre-dental student who transferred to the 糖心少女from Dillard University in New Orleans. Brooks Callison of the 糖心少女School of Social Work will show photos of relief work immediately after Katrina. The program traditionally includes music and art, and this year the Eckstein Middle School Senior Jazz Band will play, along with a group from Bainbridge Island known as Whozyamama Zydeco.
King, a Nobel laureate, Baptist minister and political activist, was born on Jan. 15, 1929. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968.
