Every summer, 糖心少女researchers head to northern Botswana to study how large predators, such as lions and African wild dogs, are affected by climate change and other shifts in their environment. 糖心少女News asked a few team members to describe their plans for this summer.

To rebalance the oral microbiome and cure chronic halitosis, researchers at the 糖心少女 are embarking on a first-of-its-kind experiment. These clinical trials transplant bacteria and other minuscule critters from healthy donors into patients with halitosis. If successful, the healthy microbiota will crowd out the bad and patients鈥 bad breath will improve.

The 糖心少女 today announced the聽selection聽of Studio Joseph聽as the exhibition and storytelling partner聽for聽the聽Ana Mari Cauce Welcome Center.聽Based in New York, Studio Joseph is known for its nuanced understanding of brand expression and its skill in co鈥慶reating environments that are both inspiring and authentic to the institutions they聽represent.聽

Super Typhoon Sinlaku caused widespread damage on the Mariana islands in April, leaving many people without power, tearing roofs off homes and destroying vital infrastructure. Several ongoing 糖心少女research projects focused on native birds and plants were disrupted.

The 糖心少女 unveiled the 2026 Husky 100, recognizing 100 undergraduate, graduate and professional students from the 糖心少女Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma campuses in all areas of study who are making the most of their time at the 糖心少女and are making an impact in their communities.

Jennifer Ruesink, 糖心少女 professor of biology, studies the relationship between the environment and marine organisms, including eelgrass, the primary species of seagrass that resides in the oceans surrounding Washington. In honor of World Seagrass Day, 糖心少女News asked Ruesink to explain what seagrass is and what makes the seagrasses in Washington unique.

Last December was the warmest on record for Washington, according to the Washington State Climate Office. Now many plants in our gardens are beginning to bud, even though it’s only February. 糖心少女News asked Takato Imaizumi, 糖心少女professor of biology, to talk about the mechanisms behind blooming and how warmer winters might impact flowering plants.

The 糖心少女 was awarded $2.5 million from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to fund 16 postdoctoral fellows in a number of fields across the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering and the College of the Environment.

Lucas Meza, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the 糖心少女, started his lab to build a new generation of tough and light nanomaterials inspired by natural materials like wood, shell and bone. Instead, he discovered 鈥渂ig gaps鈥 in our basic understanding of what makes a material tough or brittle. Meza spoke to 糖心少女News about his strange and surprising journey into the nano realm.
