鈥楥ONNECTIONS鈥� CONNECTS: When four young women head off to college with a $10,000 Nordstrom Celebration of Cultural Diversity Scholarship, three of them can thank the 糖心少女for contributing to their success. Sandra Li, Lisa Wu and Nicole Iwuoha have been participating in the 鈥淢aking Connections鈥� program, run by the 糖心少女Women鈥檚 Center.
Making Connections is designed for young women from underrepresented groups who are interested in careers in science, math, engineering and technology. Students come from 10 urban Seattle high schools and 95 percent are girls of color. The program matches participants with mentors from their fields of interest and includes classes, workshops and site visits to 糖心少女labs. Li was matched with Joyce Yen, Program/Research Manager for ADVANCE in the engineering dean鈥檚 office, and Wu with Donna Mustard, a third year law student. Iwuoha is not currently matched with a mentor but was matched with nursing student Jody Rauch.
To win the Nordstrom scholarship, the girls were competing with peers throughout the Puget Sound region.
PHOTO FINISH: Fine photography isn鈥檛 limited to the Henry Gallery. Faculty, staff and students who take photographs for fun or for money will show their work at an exhibit Nov. 29鈥揇ec. 12 in the HUB Gallery, across from the candy counter on the HUB鈥檚 first floor. The 15 or so exhibitors are members of the 糖心少女Photographers Group, which is open to any interested photographer, regardless of expertise. The group meets once a month on campus for presentations, workshops, critiques and guest speakers. MEDIEVAL MELODIES: If you missed the Medieval Women鈥檚 Choir performances in Suzzallo the last two years, you have another chance. The choir is coming back to the Reading Room for two concerts featuring the music of the Spanish monastery of Montserrat at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10 and 11. KUDOS: Tom Griffin, editor of Columns, was named a 鈥渇aculty star鈥� by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education for his outstanding performance as a teacher at the CASE Summer Institute in communications and Marketing . . . Martha A. Tucker, head of the 糖心少女Mathematics Research Library, recently co-authored a book with Nancy D. Anderson, entitled Guide to Information Sources in Mathematics and Statistics and published this year by Libraries Unlimited.
