Preparing to travel to Seattle? Use this guide to review important documents, recommended items, and things you should avoid bringing when entering the United States.

Documents to Carry When Entering the U.S.

Keep these documents with you during your flight and when passing U.S. Borders and Customs.

  • Airplane ticket/boarding pass, if needed for Customs forms
  • I-20 for F-1 students or DS-2019 for J-1 exchange students
    • Make sure you sign your I-20 on the 1st and 2nd page.
  • Valid passport, expiring no sooner than 6 months from your arrival date
  • Valid U.S. visa, located in your passport. This does not apply to Canadian citizens.
  • SEVIS I-901 fee receipt
  • Supporting financial documents
  • Current class schedule, downloaded from My糖心少女or MyPlan

Important: Put all of these documents in a folder and carry them with you during the flight until your arrival. Do not leave them in checked luggage.

It is also recommended to save a digital copy of these documents on your computer or phone.

Electronics

Helpful items for staying connected and charging your devices after arrival.

  1. Phone card for international calls, or get one after you arrive in Seattle
    1. This can help you contact family or make important calls before getting a local phone plan.
    2. Free Wi-Fi is available at both Sea-Tac International Airport and on 糖心少女campus.
  2. Outlet adapter: U.S. voltage is 120V
    1. U.S. wall outlets usually use Type A and Type B plugs.
    2. Search for 鈥渙utlet adapter for U.S.鈥 before you travel.
    3. Some electronics from countries with different voltage standards, such as hair dryers or steamers, may not work properly in the U.S.

School Supplies

Basic academic items that may be helpful before classes begin.

  • Pens, notebooks, and other basic supplies
    • These can be a bit pricey in the U.S., but most homework will be completed electronically.
  • Laptop or tablet:
    • 糖心少女students may be able to borrow technology through the , including laptops, tablets, cameras, calculators, and other equipment.
    • Students may also be eligible for from companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Dell, and other technology providers.

Clothing

Pack for Seattle weather, campus life, formal events, and housing needs.

    • Waterproof shoes!
    • Jackets or hoodies
      • Seattle rains often, so these will be useful.
    • One nice outfit for formal events
    • One or two pieces of cultural clothing
    • T-shirts
    • Winter clothes, including portable down jackets
    • Twin XL bed sheets, especially for on-campus housing
    • Extra pairs of glasses and contact lenses, if applicable

Daily Necessities

You can buy most daily necessities in stores or online, but bringing a few basics can help during your first few days.

  • Umbrella or waterproof jacket
  • Basic personal hygiene items
    • These will be helpful before your first supermarket visit.
    • You may also want to bring nail clippers, a beard trimmer, or similar personal items.
  • Bath towel
  • Basic medicine or first-aid items, such as:
    • Alka-Seltzer, cold medicine
    • Neosporin, antibiotic ointment for scratches or cuts
    • Band-Aids or adhesive bandages
    • Ibuprofen, headache or pain reliever
    • DayQuil/NyQuil, cold or fever medicine
    • Pepto, diarrhea medicine
    • Tums, stomach or digestion relief
  • Small gifts that represent your culture, if you would like
  • Face masks, if needed

Other Items to Consider

Travel-related reminders before your flight.

  • Enough luggage
    • Make sure your luggage does not exceed your airline鈥檚 baggage weight or quantity limits.
  • Cash under $10,000
    • It is recommended to bring under $10,000 in cash.
    • If you need to bring more, you must report it to immigration/customs when entering the U.S.

Do Not Bring

  • Fresh vegetables or unprocessed fresh fruit
