Does Your Human Subjects Research Have to be Reviewed by the Convened IRB?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is convened IRB review?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>All non-exempt human subjects research must obtain IRB review and approval.<\/li>\n<li>Non-exempt research that doesn\u2019t qualify for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/hsd\/do-i-need-irb-review\/expedited-review\">expedited review<\/a> must be reviewed by the convened IRB. Studies that require convened review include: clinical trials studying an investigational drug, device, or surgical procedure; studies involving blood draws over a certain amount; studies involving procedures that are particularly invasive or are greater than minimal risk.<\/li>\n<li>The convened IRB is a group of IRB members that review and approve research. Each of UW\u2019s four IRBs meets every other week. When your application is reviewed, the IRB will generally approve, conditionally approve, or defer the application. Review the worksheet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/forms-and-templates\/worksheet-irb-review-outcomes\/\">IRB Review Outcomes<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\n<li>Review by the convened IRB generally takes longer than expedited review, particularly when the convened board needs additional information before approving the application. The time from submission to approval depends on things like the inclusion of vulnerable populations, the complexity of the study, or when the 糖心少女is reviewing on behalf of other institutions. HSD\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/hsd\/getting-started\/#5\">median turnaround times for convened review<\/a> are listed on our website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Request convened IRB review<\/h2>\n<p>The steps for submitting an application for IRB review are the same whether it will be reviewed by a designated reviewer or the convened IRB.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Complete the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/forms-and-templates\/zipline-application-irb-protocol\/\">IRB Protocol form<\/a> or on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/forms-and-templates\/zipline-application-irb-protocol-no-contact-with-subjects\/\">No Contact<\/a> version of the form.<\/li>\n<li>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/hsd\/zipline\/\">Zipline<\/a>, create a new application by clicking on the <strong>Create a New Study<\/strong> button and following the instructions.
